The No. 1 ranked Hastings College Broncos lost a five set thriller (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 15-11) to the No. 11 Northwestern College (IA) Red Raiders, 3-2.
In a game where both teams had their respective winning streaks, Northwestern of 15 straight matches and Hastings College of 24 straight match victories dating back to last season, somebody had to lose.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, it was them and it happened on their home-court.
During the first two sets, the Broncos and Red Raiders traded points and neither side held more than a three-point lead until set point with Northwestern eventually taking set one 25-21. Hastings would bounce back in set two winning 25-23, to even up the match heading into the intermission.
The third set was where Hastings College gave the illusion they would run away with the match victory after running away with the set 25-15. An illusion it was, though, as Northwestern would take the fourth and fifth sets.
Senior Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE), reigning GPAC Attacker of the Week, had an off-night as she only hit .192, finishing with nine kills and 24 assists. Andrea LaVene (SR/Roca, NE) had another strong outing, hitting .400, finishing with seven kills to accompany five blocks.
For Northwestern, sophomore Anna Kiel finished with a game-high 19 kills while hitting .362.
While the Red Raiders remain tied with Midland for first in the GPAC at 6-0, Hastings College will fall into a tie for second with Dordt and will face the Midland Warriors at Lynn Farrell Arena on Oct. 4th. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
