Sioux City, IA - The Hastings College volleyball team ran its consecutive set win streak to 30 while also winning its 24th straight match in its sweep of Briar Cliff 25-17, 25-13, 25-15 on Saturday evening.
Briar Cliff had a hard time getting into a groove as the Broncos took control of set one early. Leading 5-4, Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE) continued her strong play with a kill following by an attack error by the Chargers.
Casey Krolikowski (JR/Cairo, NE) followed that up with a service ace to make it 8-4. Then Hastings would continue to make life tough for BCU as Placke and Lucy Skoch (FR/Hastings, NE) teamed up to block Toni Beck to make it 9-4.
Briar Cliff would try and hang around as Hastings was up 13-10 but the Broncos rattled off the next five points with back-to-back kills from Placke and then Andrea LaVene (SR/Roca, NE). Then three straight attack errors by BCU's Courtney Schafer and Emily Sanburg pushed the lead to 18-10 as Hastings grabbed set one 25-17.
Set two saw the teams go back-and-forth with Hastings leading 9-8 but once again, the Broncos would go on a big 7-0 run as LaVene got things going with a quick kill off the Placke assist. Then LaVene and Casey Krolikowski blocked Melissa Ditter and then an attack error by the Chargers pushed the Bronco lead to 12-8.
Two more attack errors, a Krolikowski kill and an Emily Filsinger (SR/Clearwater, NE) service ace broke the second set wide open as Hastings now led 16-8 and would run away with the set 25-13.
In set three, Hastings was really never pressured and would use and nice 4-0 run midway through the set taking a six point lead and making it a 10 point lead. LaVene had a kill while Skoch and Catherine Williams (SR/Aurora, CO) teamed up for a block followed by an attack error and another Krolikowski kill made it 19-9.
Placke was on her A game once again finishing with nine kills while hitting .318. LaVene had a monster night with nine kills while hitting .615.
Krolikowski added seven kills while hitting .278 to go along with Cassidy Ostrand (SO/Central City, NE) adding five kills and Williams with four kills while hitting .375.
As a team Hastings hit .316 for the match while holding the Chargers to -0.092.
Placke added 17 assists while Clare Hamburger (JR/Hastings, NE) finished with 14. Jill Bax (SR/Lincoln, NE) led the team with 13 digs . Skoch had her hand in on eight blocks while Krolikowski had her hand in on five blocks.
Hastings moves to 14-0 (6-0) on the season and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 30 as No. 11 Northwestern comes to town for homecoming with first serve set for 3:00 p.m. in Lynn Farrell Arena
