Mitchell, S.D.- With a 24 set-win streak on the line, the Hastings College volleyball team extended the streak to 27 sets when they defeated the Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) Tigers is straight sets (25-12,25-17,25-23) at the Mitchell Corn Palace on Friday.
Set one was dominated by the Broncos (13-0,5-0 GPAC) who started the set with a 14-5 run, capped by service aces Casey Krolikowski (JR/Cairo, NE) and Clare Hamburger (JR/Hastings, NE). This run was all the Broncos need to easily take the set for a 1-0 lead over the Tigers (12-8,1-4 GPAC).
The Broncos kept it going in set two, taking a quick 9-2 lead off a 7-0 run. The Broncos had to fight off a 7-2 run by the Tigers later in the set that got DWU within three of HC. With a 22-17 lead, Cassidy Ostrand (SO/Central City, NE), Andrea LaVene (SR/Roca, NE), and Katie Placke (SR/Grand Island, NE) got consecutive kills to take set two.
Dakota Wesleyan jumped to a quick 7-1 lead off a service ace and six Bronco errors. Hastings trailed for most of the set, but with an 18-15 deficit, the Broncos rattled off a 7-5 run to take a 22-21 lead over the Broncos. After trading points to a 23-23 tie, LaVene and Krolikowski got kills that gave them the set three and match win over the Tigers.
Despite 16 service errors, the Broncos won the match convincingly as Placke tallied 15 kills and 19 assists along with Krolikowski adding 11 kills. The Broncos also held the Tigers to a .012 hitting percentage. Jill Bax (SR/Lincoln, NE) led the Broncos defensively with 18 digs.
Hastings continues conference play when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday to take on the Briar Cliff Chargers in a 5 p.m. matchup.
