Hastings - The Hastings College women's soccer team picked up a much needed victory heading into conference play by defeating Bellevue 1-0 on Wendesday night at Lloyd Wilson Field.
After a first half that really had each team not pressing to hard and it seemed both teams were just getting a feel for one another. A total of just five shots were taken in the first half but the second half would certainly bring plenty of excitement.
The energy was high on the Broncos sideline to start the second half and the team also showed it on the field but could not put the final pieces together to find the back of the net.
The game would remain scoreless into the 85th minute when Hastings really put the pressure on the Bruin defense and keeper Laurence Rodier.
First Berkley Sharp (FR/Basehor, KS) ripped a shot that Rodier was just able to get her finger tips on. Then Heidi Bartsch (SR/Lincoln, NE) had a great opportunity but was turned away by another big save.
Moments later Gabriella DiDio (SR/Maple, Ontario) looked for the game winner only to see her shot pushed just wide.
But then, Bartsch threaded a perfect ball through to Emily Weyant (FR/Omaha, NE) as she smoked the shot past Rodier in the 86th minute which proved to be the game winner. This was Weyant's third goal of the freshman campaign.
From there, Hastings would do enough defensively to keep the Bruins off the scoreboard and seal the victory.
Lexi Harris (SR/Lincoln, NE) would finish the game with another clean sheet recording three saves. Hastings held a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Bartsch led the way with three shots and Weyant added two shots.
Hastings moves to 6-1-1 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 23 hitting the road to begin Great Plains Athletic Conference play taking on Dordt with kick-off set for 1:00 p.m. in Sioux Center, IA.
