Hastings- After a half, the Hastings College men's soccer team and the University of Jamestown (N.D.) Jimmies were tied at one, but the second half performance by the Broncos pushed them past the future-GPAC members 5-1 on Sunday at Lloyd Wilson Field.
The Broncos (4-2) and the Jimmies (0-2) were in a deadlocked battle before the Jimmies broke away with a 2-on-1 against Joe White (SR/London, England), but got a penalty kick in the 37th minute after White fouled a Jimmie in the box. The Jimmies' Henrique Lucena-Pires took the shot and got it just past White to take a 1-0 lead.
Hastings wasted no time at all after the goal with Marc Tautz (SR/Limburg, Germany) and Daniel Whitehall (JR/Warrington, England) getting the ball to Lucas Venegas (SR/Grand Island, NE) who score the equalizer in the 38th minute.
In the 60th minute, Bruno Moreira (JR/Divinopolis, Brazil) fed the ball to Tor Trosten (SO/Tromso, Norway) who connected with Whitehall for a header goal to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead over the Jimmies.
The Broncos had another strong push that was halted momentarily by a foul by the Jimmies that allowed Hastings to get a penalty kick, which Whitehall sank with ease for a 3-1 Broncos lead.
Oscar Zamudio (SR/Humble, TX) got into the action in the 84th minute with a goal assisted by Daniel Simonis (FR/Dettenheim, Germany) and Tautz, and returned the favor with an assist to Simonis in the 86th minute to put the Broncos up 5-1 in the closing minutes of the match.
Hastings outshot Jamestown 35-5 and 21-3 on goal. Whitehall and Simonis both recorded five shots, with four of Simonis' and three of Whitehall's being on goal.
The Broncos look to continue their winning streak when the host the No. 12-ranked Baker (Kans.) University Wildcats on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m.
