Hastings - The Hastings College men's soccer team ran into a well organized Benedictine Raven soccer team as the Broncos dropped its first game since 2015. The Ravens came in and upset the Broncos 3-1 on Wednesday night at Lloyd Wilson Field.
Early on both teams had great scoring opportunities as Adam James of Benedictine had his shot fly just high over cross bar early in the first half. Brayant Toro had a golden opportunity when Daniel Whitehall dropped off a pass 12 yards out but his shot was saved by Caleb Jenkins in the 25th minute.
Then the Ravens would get on the board first when Felipe Cepeda's cross found the foot of James for the 1-0 lead.
That lead would hold until early in the second half as Hastings turned up the offensive pressure and finally Lucas Venegas found Marc Tautz for the equalizer in the 51st minute.
Unfortunately, Benedictine would have a quick answer when Ryan Dickerson picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net to make it 2-1 in the 58th minute.
Hastings would continue to keep the pressure up but would be unable to beat Jenkins again as the Ravens would pick up a late open net goal to seal the win 3-1.
Hastings would out shoot the Ravens 22-12 including a 15-5 advantage in the second half.
Hastings falls to 1-1 on the season and will be back in action at the Baker Classic where the Broncos will face No. 4 Northwestern Ohio Saturday Sep. 2 at 5:00 p.m. in Baldwin City, KS.
