On the verge of a historic win, Matt Buttermore's team found itself in an unfamiliar and unenviable situation.
Buttermore's Hastings College volleyball team dropped the first two sets of the 2016 NAIA championship match to Dordt (Iowa) as the Broncos sought the program's first national title.
It was the first time all season that Hastings, which came into the match with a 32-3 record, had faced a 2-0 deficit. So after that second set, the Broncos went to the locker room, looking to regroup and find a way to turn their fortunes.
"In the locker room, we talked about character, we talked about how we come out in the third set would define us," Buttermore said. "But before I said anything, the girls had already made a decision to come out and compete a different way. The first couple of sets, we weren't playing together. Everyone was kind of tight on the court. They weren't going to go down that way."
