Grand Rapids, MI - The Hastings College softball team didn't get off to the start it was hoping to in the opening round of the NAIA National Softball Championship falling to No. 8 Davenport 10-1 in five innings on Monday afternoon.
In the top of the first, the Panthers got a lead-off walk and then a single two batters later to put runners on first and third with two outs. Then Alyssa Eastman hit a 3-run home run to make it 3-0.
Hastings went down in order in the bottom of the first and then Davenport had another big inning in the top of the second.
Following three walks that loaded the bases for Davenport with just one out, Alexa Flores would hit a grand slam opening the Panther lead to 7-0.
Davenport would push the lead to 10-0 before Lexie Linderman (FR/Omaha, NE) would get the Broncos on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth but that would be all Hastings would get dropping game one 10-1.
Hastings will now turn its attention to Olivet Nazarene in the win-or-go-home game at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 16. Olivet lost its opening round game 6-0 to Rio Grande earlier in the day. The winner will play the loser of the Rio Grand Davenport game at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening.
