Seward- The Hastings College baseball team went into day two of the Cypress Risk Management GPAC Baseball Tournament with a solid win against Mount Marty on Thursday, but this was not enough as they fell to Concordia 3-2 and lost the rematch with Mount Marty 8-2 on Friday.
In the game against Concordia, the Bulldogs struck first in the 3rd inning with a RBI-single by Christian Montero to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Concordia struck again in the 7th inning, with an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly to pad the Concordia lead 3-0.
Alex Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) started the bottom of the 7th by reaching on an error. Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) came into the game to pinch hit for Lucas Lingreen (SR/Sterling, CO), and Christensen made the Bulldogs pay with a 2-run homer to get the Bulldogs lead cut down 3-2. The Broncos were able to load the bases after Christensen's homer with an Eric Anderson (JR/Lincoln, NE) single, Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) walk, and a Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) single, but could not get any of the runners in.
The 8th inning also showed promise for the Broncos, with a single by Will Frei (SR/Omaha, NE) and Alex Utrup reaching on an error. With pinch runner Grant Norder (SO/Bruning, NE) as the tying run at second, two strikeouts and a groundout squashed the Broncos' threat.
Despite the lose, Frei had a solid outing, striking out seven in a complete game performance.
Christensen led the Broncos offensively, driving in all the Broncos' runs with his homer in the 7th inning.
In the second game of the day, Hastings was able to take a lead when Frei hit a leadoff single turned double on an error. With a groundout by Alex Utrup, Frei advanced to third, who then scored on a passed ball to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
A double in the bottom of the 3rd got two more runs in to pad the Lancers lead over the Broncos to 7-1.
Mount Marty added another run in the 6th with a solo homer to give Mount Marty an 8-1 lead.
The Broncos finish the season with a 27-24 record, their first winning record since the 2015 season where they went 24-23.
