Sioux City, Iowa- The Hastings College baseball team could not get the bats going in its 5-2, 4-3 loses to Briar Cliff on Tuesday afternoon.
Game one saw the Chargers get off to a hot start against the Broncos with two runs in the 1st inning off three singles and two stolen bases.
Briar Cliff struck again in the 2nd inning with a leadoff single, a 1-out RBI double, and a RBI-single that ended the night early for Tanner Nickoloff (SO/Thornton, CO), bringing Austin Vitosh (SO/Odell, NE) in to pitch. Vitosh got the first batter he faced to end the inning.
Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) started the 3rd inning with a leadoff homer to cut the Chargers' lead over the Broncos to 4-1.
O'Brien got the action going again in the 5th inning with a leadoff walk, stealing second and later scoring on a Ty Neill (SR/Ogallala, NE) single to make it 4-2 in favor of the Chargers.
The Chargers got the lead back to three in the bottom of the 5th with a leadoff single and scored two batters later off a single and fielding error to give Briar Cliff their eventual 5-2 win over Hastings.
Offense came at a premium for the Broncos, who only got four hits, including the homer by O'Brien, the RBI single by Neill, and Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) going 2-for-4.
Game two started similarly to game one, as the Chargers scored in the bottom of the 1st inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
The first hit of the game for the Broncos came with two outs in the 2nd inning, with Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) hitting a solo homer to tie the game 1-1.
In the 3rd inning, Donato Santos (SR/Manitou Springs, CO) got a leadoff single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and groundout, then scored on a wild pitch to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead over the Chargers.
Briar Cliff got the tying run to score in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a 2-out single.
Brandon Utrup started the 6th inning off with a leadoff single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE) before getting pinch ran for by Grant Norder (SO/Bruning, NE). Norder advanced to third on a Neill groundout, and scored on a Will Frei (SR/Omaha, NE) double that also got Jon Strotz (SO/Golden, CO) in the game to pinch run for Frei as the go-ahead run.
The Chargers got another run on the board in the bottom of the 6th with a hit batter and a 2-out double to tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the 7th had the bases loaded for the Chargers with only one out. This proved to much as Briar Cliff's Jacob Hom hit a walkoff single to give the Chargers the 4-3 win.
Christensen headlined the Broncos' offense with his solo home run.
The Broncos (26-22, 15-13) look to rebound when they go into the Cypress Risk Management GPAC Baseball Tournament as the 4-seed. Their matchup in the Concordia Bracket is against 5-seed Mount Marty, who split their 4-game series in early April. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Thursday.
