Omaha- The Hastings College softball team picked up two big wins when they traveled to Omaha on Thursday and swept the College of Saint Mary Flames 5-4, 6-5.
College of Saint Mary started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st, getting a leadoff single, a walk, scored on two Josie Bumgardner (SO/Hastings, NE) wild pitches and a 2-out RBI single to give the Flames a 2-0 lead early in the game.
In the 3rd inning, Chloe Boeka (SR/Gretna, NE) singled and advanced to second on an error, setting up Corrin Ziepke (JR/Omaha, NE) for an RBI double. Lexie Linderman (FR/Omaha, NE) followed with an RBI single to tie the game up 2-2 in the 2nd inning.
The Flames struck again with three leadoff hits and a sacrifice fly. With two outs and two runs already scored in the inning, CSM loaded the bases off a single and a walk, but could not capitalize on the opportunity to end the inning with a 4-2 lead over the Broncos.
Hastings showed their resiliency as Taylor Asche (FR/Omaha, NE) singled, Bumgardner walked, and Jessica Peterson (SR/Omaha, NE) got both runners to advance on a sacrifice bunt. Alyssa Carter (FR/Corona, CA) hit in Asche and Cara Williams (SR/Omaha, NE) hit an RBI single to tie the game with the bases loaded and only one out. Ziepke got plunked and scored the eventual game-winning run. Hastings ended the top of the 6th with three runs off three hits to take a 5-4 lead.
Bumgardner struck out nine and allowed four runs off eight hits in a complete game effort for her 10th win on the season. Ziepke finished game one going 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
Game two started with an offensive showing by both teams. Hastings started the game off with a leadoff double by Williams. Boeka reached on an error by the Flames' third baseman, allowing Williams to score the first run of the game.
Hastings tacked on another run in the 2nd inning as Makana Kekaulike (JR/Waipahu, HI) hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on a Mikaelah Molifua (SR/Lincoln, NE) bunt single. Williams got Kekaulike in with a groundout to the second baseman, giving Hastings a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.
College of Saint Mary got a run in in the bottom of the 2nd with a leadoff homer to cut the deficit to one.
Hastings loaded the bases, with Ziepke reaching on an error, Kaitlynn Knott (SO/Flagstaff, AZ) doubling, and Asche walking. Kekaulike hit into a fielder's choice that got Ziepke out at home. With Molifua batting, Knott scored on a wild pitch, putting Hastings up 3-1.
The Flames had another leadoff homer to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Broncos.
With one out in the 5th inning, Knott singled and was batted in by a Asche homer to put Hastings up 5-2.
CSM got a leadoff single by Baca to start the bottom of the 6th inning and had Baca advance to third on a passed ball and wild pitch with two outs. Baca scored on a single by Larsen to get the Flames to within two.
The Flames got to Sarah Barger (FR/Windsor, CO) in the bottom of the 7th, as Trendle and Chamberlain hit back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning. Both Trendle and pinch runner Beal advanced to second and third on a passed ball. This set up Banks for a 2-run, game-tying double. Banks reached third on a wild pitch, but did not score and the game went to extra innings tied at five.
Williams led off the 8th inning with a single and got to second on a Boeka bunt single. Both advanced on a wild pitch. Linderman got the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Williams.
Barger got her 10th win on the season with eight strikeouts, allowing five runs. Williams hit her stride with a 3-for-5 night with two runs and an RBI. Kekaulike also had a great night, going 3-for-4 with a run. Asche also added in with a 2-run homer.
Up next for the Broncos (26-18, 11-5), who moved up to third in the GPAC standings with the sweep, look to extend their streak with a doubleheader on Saturday at the Smith Softball Complex against the Dordt Defenders.
