Hastings- Will Frei (SR/Omaha, NE) dominated in his start in game two as the Hastings College baseball team split a Thursday evening doubleheader with Concordia taking game one 7-0 while Hastings took game two 9-0 at Duncan Field.
Game one started heavily in favor of the Broncos with Lance Hansen (JR/Blair, NE) retiring seven straight batters to start the game, though that start was quickly erased with a 2-run 3rd inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Broncos.
Concordia got at Hansen again in the 4th inning with an RBI-groundout by Wade Council. The end of the line for Hansen was in the 6th inning, as Concordia collected four runs off two hits, two errors, a walk and two hit batter against Hansen and relief pitcher Alec Stremel (SR/Thornton, CO) to put Concordia up 7-0.
Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE) led Hastings offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double.
Game two started in a much hotter fashion for Hastings as Will Frei would strike out seven of the first nine batters he faced.
Offense backed Frei's hot start in the 2nd inning as with two outs, Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE) walked and scored on an Eric Anderson (JR/Lincoln, NE) double. Anderson was pinch ran for by Donato Santos (SR/Manitou Springs, CO) and scored two batters later on a Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) single to put Hastings up 2-0 early in the game.
Going into the 5th inning, Frei still had the perfect game intact, but gave up the perfect game with a 1-out walk and the no-hitter two batters later, as Wade Council hit a 2-out single. This threat did not amount to anything with the next batter popping out to Brandon Utrup to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Stone doubled and pinch ran for by Grant Norder (SO/Bruning, NE), who advanced on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to give Hastings a 3-0 lead over Concordia.
Concordia's biggest push was in the 6th inning, with a leadoff double and an error. This first threat was negated by a double play, but two straight walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. This threat also was to no avail, as the next batter hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning with the 2-hit shutout intact.
Hastings had a monstrous bottom half of the 6th,as Anderson led off the inning with a single and Santos, who pinch ran again for Anderson, advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE). Bulldogs pitcher Nic Seaman balked, advancing Santos to third with only one out in the inning. Brandon Utrup came up to bat, but was plunked and pinch ran for by Trey Fleming (SO/Cheyenne, WY). Stone hit in Santos and advanced Fleming to third. Ty Neill (SR/Ogallala, NE) also got an RBI, getting Fleming in with a fielder's choice, but forcing out Stone. Frei helped out his own cause with an RBI-double that split the gap in left-center and rolled out to the wall. Frei's double also chased Concordia's starter from the game and saw Daniel Stohlmann (FR/Manley, NE) pinch run for Frei. Alex Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) joined the fun, scoring Stohlmann with a single and advancing after Lucas Lingreen (SR/Sterling, CO) got plunked. Both Alex Utrup and Lingreen scored on a double by Petersen that also split the gap in left-center to roll to the wall, scoring the fifth and sixth runs on the inning and putting Hastings up 9-0.
Though Frei gave up another hit in the 7th inning, his performance was dominant tonight, allowing only three hits and three walks while striking out nine Bulldogs in the 107-pitch, complete game shutout. "I've been working on my changeup lately, and I got that going pretty early and felt that out pretty early. Kept them off-balance. My first couple of outings had been a lot of fastballs and they probably saw that on the scouting report, so I thought it was big to have the changeup, and be able to work off that," Frei said.
Offensively, Stone led again, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Utrup went 2-for-4, with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI. Frei also got in on the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
Next for the Broncos, who go to 20-16 and 9-7 on the season with the split, is another doubleheader against the Bulldogs on Saturday, this time in Seward. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
