Hastings- A day after being swept by Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D., Hastings swept Mount Marty 12-0, 6-2 on Sunday at Duncan Field in what ended up being an offensive clinic.
Game one had its fair share of scoring early and often by Hastings, who scored in four of the first five innings.
Hastings first struck in the 1st inning, as Lancers' pitcher Alex Mogensen could not keep control the ball, walking Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) and Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE), allowing an RBI-single to Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE), walking Ty Neill (SR/Ogallala, NE), and giving up a sacrifice fly to Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) to put Hastings up 2-0 early on.
In the 3rd inning, Hastings pounced on Mogensen again, scoring Stone and Neill on an Alex Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) groundout and Lucas Lingreen (SR/Sterling, CO) triple to very deep-center field, respectively, giving Hastings a 4-0 lead.
Hastings once again got to Mogensen, with O'Brien and Brandon Utrup hitting 1-out singles, chasing Morgensen out of the game. Muth Colin came in, allowing three runs off two doubles and a walk to pad the Hastings lead 7-0.
Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE) led off the 5th inning with a walk, which started a chain of hits by Grant Kraus (JR/Castle Rock, CO) and O'Brien. Brandon Utrup hit a double that scored Petersen, pinch runner Donato Santos (SR/Manitou Springs, CO), and O'Brien. This also got Colin out of the game to go to the third Lancer pitcher of the game with no outs in the 5th inning. Grant Norder (SO/Bruning, NE) came into the game as a pinch runner for Brandon Utrup and scored two batters later on a Neill groundout. With two outs, Christensen hit a double and scored off an Alex Utrup single to give Hastings the eventual 12-0 final score.
The Broncos' offense combined for 13 hits, five of which were extra-base hits, and six walks. Stone went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. O'Brien went 2-for-3 with three runs. Brandon Utrup went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs and Alex Utrup went 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs.
Andrew Kuta (SR/Edgar, NE) threw a complete game, allowing seven hits and three walks.
The first run of game two was scored in the bottom of the 2nd, as Neill scored on an Alex Utrup groundout to put Hastings up 1-0.
The bottom of the 3rd saw Hastings make their lead 2-0 as Eric Anderson (JR/Lincoln, NE) hit a leadoff single and pinch ran for by Daniel Stohlmann (FR/Manley, NE). Stohlmann scored on a 2-out single by Brandon Utrup.
Brandon Utrup started the 6th inning with a double down the left field line. Head Coach Steve Spongberg again had Norder pinch run for Brandon Utrup. Norder advanced to third on a Stone groundout and scored on a Neill sacrifice fly to deep left-center, giving Hastings a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Mount Marty threatened in the top of the 7th, as a walk, single, and a walk would load the bases with 2-outs. This got Nickoloff out of the game after throwing 128 pitches. Xander Schmidt (SR/Hastings, NE) replaced Nickoloff and got a popout to left field on the first pitch to end the threat.
Alex Utrup led off the 7th inning with a triple to deep right-center field and scored on a Lingreen single. Anderson hit a bunt single and was substituted by pinch runner Stohlmann. Santos reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. O'Brien hit an RBI-single. Brandon Utrup grounded into a double play that resulted in Stohlmann scoring. Hastings led 6-0 after seven innings.
The Lancers broke up the shutout with two runs in the 8th inning on an error and a single.
Offensively, O'Brien, Neill, Lingreen, Anderson, and the Utrup twins combined for nine hits, five RBIs, and three runs.
After sweeping Mount Marty, Hastings goes to 19-15 and 8-6 on the season and look to keep the hot-hitting going when Concordia comes to play at Duncan on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 5 .p.m.
