Hastings- The Doane bats were unable to do much, as the Broncos were able to limit Doane to seven hits in both games en route to a 5-0, 6-3 sweep Tuesday night at Duncan Field.
Andrew Kuta (SR/Edgar, NE) pitched a one hit, complete game shutout in game one. Kuta had good command of his pitches and had help from the Bronco defense. "I have to give all the credit that I have done on the mound to the defense. I can't do it myself. These guys make all the plays. They do all the work. We had 21 outs and the defense made 19 of them. I am doing my best to make them make the plays that I know they can make and just not to do too much and keep it simple on the mound," Kuta said.
Hastings struck again the next inning with the third straight single by Neill to start the inning that scored Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE). Utrup reached on a fielding error to load the bases with two outs. Lucas Lingreen (SR/Sterling, CO) walked to force in an unearned run and give the Broncos a 3-0 lead.
The sole hit that Kuta gave up was a leadoff single by Doane's Nathan Silva. Silva would be the last out of the inning as he got caught stealing 2nd base.
With two outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) doubled and scored on an Utrup single. Utrup advanced to third on a misplayed grounder before Lingreen struck out to finish the inning.
One inning later, Grant Kraus (JR/Castle Rock, CO) hit a leadoff single and substituted for pinch runner Donato Santos (SR/Manitou Springs, CO). Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) went for a bunt, but Doane's Nathan Silva overthrew the first baseman that allowed Santos to score from 1st and O'Brien to advance to third to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead.
Offensively, Hastings was led by Neill and Christensen, who both went 2-for-3 with a run a piece.
Game two started out rough for starting pitcher Xander Schmidt (SR/Hastings, NE), who allowed two runs in the 1st inning off three hits to give Doane a 2-0 lead.
Hastings fought back with a 5-run 2nd inning that saw Hastings get four hits, two walks, a hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch, and 10 batters faced that plated Christensen, Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE), Lingreen, O'Brien, and Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Broncos.
In the 4th inning, the Broncos O'Brien hit a leadoff double and scored two sacrifice hits later to put the Broncos up by four.
Doane, who tallied only one hit after after the 2nd inning, made a push in the top of the 7th inning with two singles and an error that would plate Doane's Jacob Duhey. This error ended Schmidt's night and bring in Will Frei (SR/Omaha, NE). With runners on the corners with no outs, Frei struck out the first batter he faced and induced a double play to finish the game.
The sweep makes Hastings 17-13 and 6-4 on the season and puts them in 1st place in the GPAC standings. The Broncos play next against Mount Marty Saturday in Yankton, South Dakota.
