Hastings - The Hastings College softball team had not had much luck against the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan this season dropping the first two games of the year before picking up a split on Sunday dropping game one 4-2 before winning game two 7-2 at the Smith Softball Complex.
In her longest outing of the season, Ashlynn Clifford (FR/Corona, CA) kept the Coyote bats at bay as KWU had been averaging six runs per game against the Lady Broncos in the first three meetings.
Clifford allowed just two runs on three hits as KWU seemed to find it difficult to hit the ball hard off the freshman.
Another bright spot for HC has been Lexie Linderman (FR/Omaha, NE) as she has three home runs against Kansas Wesleyan this season entering this game and wasted little time hammering another 2-run home run to left in the bottom of the 1st. This is her 10 home run of the season.
With Clifford holding KWU down, Hastings led 2-0 into the bottom of the 4th when Makana Kekaulike (JR/Waipahu, HI) smashed her first home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 3-0.
Then in the bottom of the 5th, the Lady Broncos opened the game up plating four runs on four hits. Clifford helped her own cause with a RBI single. Cara Williams (SR/Omaha, NE) would find home plate on a double steal. Josie Bumgardner (SO/Hastings, NE) also had a RBI infield single and Brittney Loney (SO/Omaha, NE) picked up a RBI on a walk.
With Hastings now leading 7-0, Clifford finished things off with only allowing a 2-run home run in the 6th.
Linderman finished the game going 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Clifford, Kekaulike, Bumgardner and Loney each finishing with a RBI in the win.
In game one, Hastings jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Bumgardner picked up a two out two RBI single to left in the bottom of the first for the early 2-0 lead.
But unfortunately for the Lady Broncos, it took just one swing off the bat of Taylor Todd as she hit a grand slam in the top of the 4th as KWU was able to hold on for the 4-2 victory.
Hastings is now 13-13 (1-1) on the year and will be back in action Monday Mar. 20 hitting the road to take on Bethel in a doubleheader with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. in North Newton, KS.
