Forest City, IA - The Hastings College baseball team took on Waldorf University on a cool and blustery day Sunday winning game one 9-4 before dropping game two 4-3.
The Broncos got things started early on taking advantage of a Warrior error in the top of the 1st as Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) reached base followed by a Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) single putting runners on first and second with not outs.
Two batters later, Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE) singled up the middle driving home O'Brien for the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) picked up a RBI when he was walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-0.
Petersen would pick up another RBI single in the 2nd pushing the Bronco lead to 3-0.
Then in the 5th, Hastings blew the game wide open as Utrup got the rally going with a RBI single with the bases loaded. The Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE) picked up a single and an error by the right fielder cleared the bases as Hastings now led 7-0 and never looked back.
Andrew Kuta (SR/Edgar, NE) Had a rough bottom half of the 5th but worked his way through the game giving up four runs (two earned) over his complete game 7.0 innings while striking out seven Warriors.
Petersen went 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored in game one. Utrup was also 3-for-5 while Grant Kraus (JR/Castle Rock, CO) recorded two hits of his own.
In game two, Hastings got off to another good start as Petersen led the 2nd inning off with a double and would be moved to third on the Drew Magee (SR/Longmont, CO) single to center.
Christensen drove home Petersen with a single through the hole on the left side and Magee would later score on the Eric Anderson (JR/Lincoln, NE) single to make it 2-0.
Waldorf would then answer with three runs of its own to take a 3-2 lead heading into the 6th. With two outs, Magee stepped up and cracked a home run over the left field fence to tie the game 3-3.
But the Warriors would get a run back in the bottom of the 6th on a sacrifice fly as Hastings would drop the second game of the double dip 4-3.
Magee finished the game going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Christensen and Anderson both recorded RBIs in game two as well.
Hastings is now 9-9 on the year and will be back in action Monday Mar. 20 taking on Waldorf in another doubleheader with first pitch set for 4:30 p.m. in Forest City, IA.
