Hastings - The Hastings College baseball team picked up its first win over York since March of 2015 defeating the Panthers 4-1 on a beautiful evening at Duncan Field.
The Broncos would get off to a strong start as Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) would get things started with a single to left. Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE) then doubled down the left field line as Utrup would be sent home by Head Coach Steve Spongberg. The ball beat him to the plate but Utrup was able to slide under the tag and would be called safe as Hastings led 1-0.
Xander Schmidt (SR/Hastings, NE) looked dominant on the mound shutting York down throughout the first six innings as he went 7.0 strong innings giving up just one run on five hits while striking out four.
A keay moment in the game came in the top of the 5th with two outs as Schmidt gave up a two out double to Timmion Hughes with Cale Anderson on first base. Ty Neill (SR/Ogallala, NE) tracked the ball down and before Anderson could cross the plate, Hughes would be tagged out at third ending the threat.
Still leading 1-0 heading to the bottom of the 5th, Utrup would get things going again with a one out single. Following a Stone groundout to first advancing Utrup to second, Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE) hit a RBI single to left to make it 2-0.
York would threaten again in the 7th as Kevin Olmstead hit a RBI double to make it 2-1 and then would advance to third on a wild pitch. Schmidt settled in and struckout DB Vidal and then got Hughes to line out to short to preserve the 2-1 lead.
The Broncos would answer right back in the bottom half o f the 7th as Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) led the inning off with a single and then would advance to second on the Utrup sacrifice.
Stone picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to shallow center pushing the lead to 3-1. Two batters later Neill doubled to left scoring Stone increasing the Bronco lead to 4-1.
From there, Spongberg wasted no time bringing in the hottest pitcher on the staff as Andrew Kuta (SR/Edgar, NE) came in a pitched two innings of no hit ball earning the save.
Stone finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Utrup and Lucas Lingreen (SR/Sterling, CO) both finished with two hits as Hastings out hit the Panthers 12-to-4.
Hastings improves to 8-8 and will be back in action this weekend taking on Waldorf in a three game set with a doubleheader on Saturday Mar. 18 and then a single game on Sunday Mar. 19 in Forest City, IA.
