Salina, KS - The Hastings College baseball team continues its great play defeating Kansas Wesleyan 9-5 on Tuesday night.
It didn't take the Bronco bats long to get going against the Coyotes as Ty O'Brien (JR/Omaha, NE) led the inning off with a single. Two batters later, Reed Stone (JR/Sutton, NE) doubled home O'Brien for the early 1-0 lead.
Following a walk and a hit by pitch to Zack Petersen (JR/Waverly, NE) and Drew Magee (SR/Longmont, CO) to load the bases, Luke Christensen (SR/Davenport, NE) woud blast his third home run of the season and his first grand slam of the year to push the Bronco lead to 5-0 before KWU could even swing a bat.
The Coyotes would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning and another back in the bottom of the second as Hastings would carry a 5-2 lead into the 5th.
Hastings would get three straight singles from Stone, Petersen and the RBI single from Magee to make it 6-2. Hastings would get another run on a double play ground out from Christensen to make it 7-2.
Tanner Nickoloff (SO/Thornton, CO) pitched a solid 4.2 innings giving up five runs with four of them earned while striking out three. Xander Schmidt (SR/Hastings, NE) would then come on for the final 4.1 innings giving up just two hits and surrendering no runs while also striking out three. This was Schmidt's first outing of the season.
O'Brien, Stone, Brandon Utrup (JR/Lincoln, NE) and Christensen each finished with two hits while Christensen added four RBIs and Stone had two RBIs.
